Chillagoe Caves Tour is part of our two day tour from the coast and future one day tours from the AthertonTablelands.
Copperfield Gorge - Einasleigh:
The beautiful Copperfield Gorge is located at Einasleigh, a quiet little outback gulf town built beside the Copperfied River. The gorge has been formed by the river eroding a channel through the basalt left from consecutive ancient lava flows from Volcanic eruptions in the McBride Volcanic Province. From water worn surfaces and steep walls, to the sandy little beaches, the gorge opens up into the sandy river and junction with the Einasleigh River and is host to a congregation of resident local Freshwater Crocodiles. The Einasleigh Hotel can be seen from the gorge;it is a short walk to visit the historic country hotel which opened as the Central Hotel in 1909.
Cobbold Gorge:
Queenslands youngest gorge is located on Robin Hood Station, 42 km south from Georgetown. The spectacular Cobbold Gorge is part of a rugged sandstone formation. The gorge narrows down to 2 metres in places with 20 metre high multi coloured cliff faces bearing their face to the sunlight or hiding in the cool of their own cast shadows. Simon and Gaye Terry established and run Cobbold Gorge tours and village accomodation. You can silently cruise the gorge in the electric powered flat bottomed boat or on a stand up paddle board and soak up the atmosphere of nature's sights and sounds. If you don't spot a freshwater crocodile whilst on the water then you may see one from the guided tour above the gorge as the informative guides explain the geology and landscapes formation. Transport to the gorge from the village is by 4wd buses operated by Cobbold Gorge guides. The village caters from unpowered camping to air conditioned rooms. With a restaurant, bar and a stunning infinity pool that overlooks the dam and out into the Gulf Savannah wilderness. Wottaview Tours conduct a deluxe dome swag camping experience at Cobbold Village or you can choose to stay in air conditioned cabins, consisting of three levels of comfort.
Chillagoe Caves:
The landscape around Chillagoe is believed to have began to form about 400 million years ago on the shallow sea floor as limestone was deposited as calcerous mud and coral reefs. The sea receded and major earth movements tilted and folded the limestone with other embedded sediments to an almost vertical position. Erosion by water over long periods of time to the exposed limestone resulted in the weathered towers of limestone you see today. These are called Karsts some as high as 40 metres. Fluctuating groundwater levels slowly dissolved some of the limestone, creating caverns and passages. Rain combined with carbon dioxide in the air and the soil to form a mild acid which has seeped through cracks and lines of weakness called joints, dissolving the limestone to form underground caverns and tunnels and depositing material in the form of cave decorations of calcite stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones, deposited by surface waters penetrating through the rock.
Undara Lava Tubes
'Undara' is an Aboriginal word meaning 'long way" which is appropriate considering these amazing structures are Australia's longest lava tube system, and one of the longest in the world. After the violent eruption of a large volcano about 190 000 years ago, spewed molten lava over the surrounding landscape the lava ran down riverbed valleys and cooled on the outside forming an outer crust. The molten larva inside this self made tube continued to flow through out the tubes leaving the immense hollow tubes and caves that are seen today.
Due to collapses of the tubes' roof at various locations dry rainforest has been able to grow and support wildlife that shelters there . Semi-evergreen vine thicket grows in the moist, sheltered entrances to some of the lava caves. Animals such as Rock-wallabies, insectivorous bat colonies and owls roost in the cool openings. Due to the danger of unknown openings and unclean air in some tubes all visits to the tubes are guided tours. Wottaview Tours engage Joe from The Bedrock Village at Mt Surprise to conduct our tours for us. Joe is a certified Savannah Guide who has been guiding the Undara Lava tubes for decades and educating thousands of people of their origin and importance.
