About this tour

This tour combines the lot. We leave from the Wet Tropics coast and climb up through the World Heritage National Parks lined with rainforest and decorated with waterfalls, crystal clear lakes and rivers. On top of the range the brilliant wet season green foliage and irrigated dry season paddocks assault your eyes before crossing the Millstream like a gate swung open to a dry paddock. The change is stark and more so in the dry season. The scenery is still spectacular but has changed from the soft coastal plains and tablelands to reveal a peak of inland Australia. We visit the last big waterfall (the widest single drop waterfall in Australia) before returning to the road to see the rise of the termite mounds greet us at the roadside edges. We cross hot springs and past cattle grazing beyond their paddocks to chew the best grass beside the road. The cattle and termite mounds look the same from a distance and change shape and size with the soil types and conditions. This is only the start of your journey.

Day 1 Tully to Pinnarendi Station Stay & Cafe:

Rainforests, Waterfalls and crystal clear rivers to open savannah. We stop at Pinnarendi Station Stay & Cafe and set up camp in the shaded camping area across from the rustic but stunningly organised dining area and wood fired cooking oven. Nadene's treats and Ronnie's baking are raved about in these parts and tonight's menu will no doubt impress as will the atmosphere around the large suspended slab dining table. After breakfast and packing up camp we leave Pinnarendi Station and head south.

Day 2 Pinnarendi to Cobbold Gorge:

A short distance down the road we stop at Forty Mile Scrub National Park where a 300 metre walking track with informative signage describes the semi-evergreen vine thicket and dry rainforest. One of the few remnant dry rainforests remaining in North Queensland. After heading west to Mt Surprise township, we make a comfort stop and purchase lunch. We travel the short cut to Einasleigh through a cattle station, with a stop along the way. At Einasleigh we stop to view the hidden gorge only a couple of hundred metres from the pub. Take time to soak up this amazing place and cool off in its waters. Check out the historic 1930's Einasleigh Hotel and its history. A range of soil types and vegetation is encountered on the drive to Forsayth and distant views observed as we cross the range. We stop at the Forsayth general store and hotel for those wishing to purchase items and food before setting off for the drive to Cobbold Gorge Village. Upon arrival at the Village we set up camp. You are free to explore this amazing location with all its facilities. Take a swim in the infinity pool overlooking the dam below set to the backdrop of the bush. Canoe in the dam or walk one of the walking tracks near the village. Sit at the bar or relax in the shade of the trees and just take it all in. You only need to ensure after breakfast you don't miss the Cobbold 4wd bus to take you to the gorge the next morning for the boat ride through the gorge and informative short walking tour. Air conditioned rooms are available at Cobbold Gorge for additional cost.

Day 3 Cobbold Gorge to Mt Surprise:

After the morning tour and packing up we head to Georgetown with a station tour to observe some wildlife. Visit the Cumberland Dam and Chimney before heading east to Mt Surprise. Our accommodation is the Bedrock Village run by Joe & Jo. They have built it up over 20 years to become a little oasis of shady trees, lawn, cabins and large camping sites with all the amenities and great food. It is a short stroll to the main street shops or the creek that runs behind the village. Once camp is set up relax at the pool, explore the town or wander down to Elizabeth Creek. Air conditioned Cabins can be booked at Bedrock Village for additional cost.
